What should I do if I don't think I can afford to hire an attorney?

Contingency fee

Our Alabama and Georgia attorneys discuss how contingency fees work in personal injury cases.

Whether you were injured by someone else's negligence or your loved one was harmed in a nursing home, you may be looking to take legal action. One of the most common reasons why people don't hire an attorney to help them pursue a case is the cost of legal services.

Cases involving nursing home abuse and neglect or personal injury are often highly complex and must be properly litigated. Insurance companies will take advantage of any errors made in the process. Without the help of an experienced attorney, you could end up with a lowball settlement or no compensation for your damages.

There is no way to put a quick estimate on how much your case will cost. The labor that goes into your case and the materials needed for trial can be costly and add up quickly. It will also take time to investigate and litigate your case. There are many law firms that will charge you upfront hourly or lump sum fees for their services. The good news is that Braswell Murphy & Grubb doesn't charge any upfront fees. We work on a contingency fee basis, which means you don't pay unless we win your case. If we don't win, you owe us nothing.

How does a contingency fee work?

The reason why we work on a contingency fee basis is because we understand that many of our clients don't have upfront money to hire an attorney. When someone becomes discouraged from hiring an attorney due to the cost, the insurance companies always have the upper hand. Getting legal representation on a contingency fee basis levels the playing field and gives you a fair advantage to pursue the justice and compensation that you deserve.

When you're compensated through a financial settlement or a court verdict, a percentage of your recovery will go to your attorney to pay for their fees. Your attorney pays upfront for all legal expenses, such as:

  • Investigative resources
  • Case litigation
  • Obtaining documents

These expenses are later reimbursed when your case is won.

Contingency fees only apply to legal expenses related to the services offered by your attorney. This doesn't include certain out-of-pocket expenses such as filing fees and court costs in the event your case goes to trial.
